JISC Effective Practice with e-Assessment Guide

A new publication, Effective Practice with e-Assessment, is to be launched at the JISC Conference on 13 March. The guide provides an overview of what’s going on in e-assessment in colleges and universities across the UK.

e-Assessment is a broad canvas taking a variety of forms - initial and diagnostic, formative or summative, computer delivered and marked, or merely supported by computers at some part in the process. The evidence from the new publication suggests that all of these examples are becoming increasingly commonplace, whether driven by a national awarding body or generated locally within an institution.

Like the previous JISC guides to e-learning practice – Effective Practice with e-Learning and Innovative Practice with e-Learning – this up-to-the-minute review of systems, technologies and practice in e-assessment is structured around a series of case studies. By doing so, it illustrates first hand the benefits and challenges of technology in assessment and highlights what new practices will mean for institutions, staff and learners.

Technology is a fast-changing scene and no such publication would be complete without an informed guess as to where e-assessment will be in ten years’ time. This the publication delivers, based on advice from a wide range of e-assessment experts, all of whom are acknowledged. And just in case you were thinking of going into e-assessment yourself, the publication concludes with a planning tool and defines unfamiliar terms in a helpful glossary.

Effective Practice with e-Assessment will be a valuable introduction to the domain of e-assessment for all those who manage, deliver or support educational practice in a technology-rich context – departmental heads, learning technologists, e-learning managers, staff development managers, examinations officers and administrators.

It will also be a useful read for classroom practitioners needing to know more about the pros and cons of technology in assessment.
